Information for High School Student Research Volunteers
The following forms below must be downloaded, reviewed, and signed (where applicable) before the first day of research. Otherwise, the student will not be able to participate in lab activities. The lab is in Room 3139 and my office is in Room 3104 of the the Mary Townes Science Building.
Please register for 1 - 5 days (they do not need to be consecutive) in order to participate this summer using the "Sign Up Genius" link that was sent to your email inbox. The hours can be flexible, if needed. The student will need to provide transportation to and from NC Central Univ. This link will take you to the campus map. You will want to park in the upper or lower parking lot next to the BRITE building. (Do NOT park in a reserved spot, or you will be towed!) I will see about getting a temporary parking permit. Please call me when you arrive. Parents can also come to see the lab and even stay to participate, if they would like.
Things that you will need for that day:
- Lunch or money to purchase lunch on or off campus; any needed drinks or snacks. (I do have cold water bottles available.)
- Closed-toed shoes, e.g. no sandals or slides
- Something to do during downtime. There will be gaps where the experiment just needs time. Feel free to bring a book, laptop, etc. (The campus does have guest wifi access.)
- Shorts or long skirts are fine, but the longer the better.
- Safety glasses or googles. They need to be impact resistant with side shields. Students have had good luck with shooting glasses. They just need to be comfortable. (I have a couple of pairs that can be borrowed, if the student forgets.)
- Please let me know if the student has any known allergies in order to keep her or him safe. For example, we use ampicillin in our growth media. If a student is highly sensitive to penicillins (or other beta lactam-class) antibiotics, please inform me ahead of time.
Things that the lab will provide:
- A lab coat to use that day and other PPE
